Weed Control in the Southwest Suburbs — What Works and What Does Not

Weed control is one of the most misunderstood aspects of lawn care in the Southwest Chicago suburbs. Most homeowners and even some property managers wait until weeds appear before thinking about treatment — which is the lawn care equivalent of waiting until you are sick to start taking vitamins. Effective weed control starts before weeds emerge, not after.

The most important weed control tool available for Illinois lawns is pre-emergent herbicide. Applied in early spring — typically late March to early April when soil temperatures reach 50°F — pre-emergent creates a barrier in the top layer of soil that prevents weed seeds from germinating. Crabgrass, which is the most problematic summer annual weed in the Southwest Suburbs, germinates from seed every year. A properly timed pre-emergent application stops it before it starts.

Timing is everything with pre-emergent. Apply too early and the product breaks down before weed seeds germinate. Apply too late and crabgrass has already germinated and the window is closed. In the Chicago area, the optimal window is generally the two-week period bracketing the forsythia bloom — typically late March to mid-April depending on the year. Post-emergent weed control addresses weeds that have already emerged. Broadleaf weeds — dandelions, clover, plantain, and creeping Charlie — are the most common targets in Chicago-area lawns. Selective broadleaf herbicides kill the weeds without harming the surrounding grass. For best results, post-emergent applications should be made when weeds are actively growing, temperatures are between 60°F and 85°F, and no rain is expected for 24 to 48 hours.

Crabgrass that was not stopped by pre-emergent requires post-emergent crabgrass killer. These products are most effective on young crabgrass — two to four tiller stage — and become less effective as the plant matures. Late-season post-emergent applications on mature crabgrass are often disappointing. Prevention is significantly more effective than treatment.

Weed pressure in commercial properties is especially important to manage. A retail center or office park with visible weeds in the lawn or landscape beds signals neglect to customers and tenants. Consistent fertilization and weed control keeps commercial properties looking sharp and competitive — especially along entry drives, parking islands, and high-visibility areas.

The most effective weed control program combines pre-emergent in spring, post-emergent broadleaf treatment in late spring and fall, proper mowing height (tall grass shades out many annual weeds), and a healthy fertilization program that promotes thick turf density. Thick grass leaves no room for weeds to establish.
